Our guest-speaker journeys explore Ethiopia at a gentle pace and with expert insights of this unique and fascinating country. With an emphasis on its history and spirituality, we can trace the origins and evolution of the only pre-colonial church in sub-Saharan Africa. We start in the city of Axum where Ethiopia’s Orthodox traditions first began during the 4th century AD, when the Axumite Empire became the world’s earliest Christian kingdom. From here we can continue to the heart of the Ethiopian Highlands and visit the exquisite rock-hewn churches in Lalibela. For the more adventurous, journeys can include exploration of the many hidden rock-hewn churches of the Gheralta Region, perhaps Ethiopia's best kept secret. We can visit the fortified city of Gondar, known as the "Camelot of Africa". It is still a great centre of theological teaching in the distinctive scholarship of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, based upon oral traditions that have changed little over the centuries.
Accompanied by our expert guides, Ethiopia’s rich history is matched by its spectacular scenery and warm hospitality.
