Seeking solitude

Last week’s In Our Time on Radio 4 with Melvyn Bragg was about the Philosophy of Solitude. A fascinating discussion touched upon many areas relating to South Sinai, including Elijah’s time in the wilderness, the emergence of desert hermits and the Desert Fathers and Mothers of Egypt.

The programme gives a wonderful introduction for anyone venturing to the desert with us for the first time and seeking solitude, especially those coming on the Adventure into Silence with Sara Maitland, but it also offers interesting references for those who are keen to learn more, from Plato to Thoreau.
